SUMMARY:October Support Meeting: Accreta Awareness & Prevention
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October support meeting as we participate in Accreta Awareness Month. Placenta accreta is a serious condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus\, resulting in complications. The greatest risk factor for accreta is a previous uterine scar\, and the risk for developing placenta accreta increases with each subsequent repeat C-section. \nFor the educational portion of our meeting\, we will present a general overview of this high-risk condition\, as well as the reasons behind its increasing prevalence. \nWe are also very honored to have Melany Rogers as a guest speaker for this meeting! Melany is a local mom of three and will be sharing her incredible story of survival after a diagnosis of placenta accreta + placenta previa with her third child. Melany uses her own story to spread awareness about placenta accreta and to promote blood donation in our community. Please come listen to her story- it’s so important to hear! \nWe will also designate a time for birth story sharing and additional support. Partners\, support people\, and kids welcome. Due to the somewhat serious nature of this month’s meeting topic\, however\, we ask that you use your own discretion as a parent in whether or not you want your child to attend this particular meeting. \nOur monthly support meetings are always free. DESCRIPTION:As part of our ongoing efforts to provide inclusive opportunities to all members of the community\, the Education Department at the Birmingham Zoo and KultureCity are excited to announce our new Special Saturdays program. Special Saturdays is a series of zoo-based learning experiences for children and adolescents with cognitive or physical disabilities whose opportunities for engagement in community programs might otherwise be limited. Caregivers must attend all classes with participants to provide behavioral support and meet child-specific needs. This program is designed with the unique learning needs of this population in mind. Using evidence-based teaching and sensory strategies\, we hope to provide a fun and engaging educational experience that will benefit all participants. \nClasses are held the second Saturday of each month from 10am-11am and 2:30-3:30pm for students age 8 and up. \nThere is no charge for the Special Saturdays program. Space is limited to 10 students per class. Caregivers must attend all classes with participants to provide behavioral support and meet child-specific needs.
