With technology becoming more advanced there are more electronics for kids than ever before. Children prefer to stay inside watching shows or playing games than to explore the great outdoors. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggest 2 hours or less of screen time a day but most children are getting 4 to 6 hours a day. Playing outside does not hold the same fun that it did before all the new gadgets came out. Boys and girls are struggling to come up with things to do on their own. They are losing their creativity and ability to entertain themselves.
Spending 30 minutes a day outside has many benefits for kids. It provides the freedom to explore, shout, run, and learn about what type of environment they live in. They can be messy, experiment, and try new things that are not available indoors. They get lots of physical exercise that encourages brain growth and strengthens attention and memory capacities, they are ready to learn and can focus more in the classroom, healthy lifestyle habits are made that last into adulthood. Outdoor play has been proven to reduce stress and trauma allowing children to relax and feel calm.
As the weather turns chilly it is easy to keep the kids in. But bundling them up and letting them run wild for a half hour will be one of the best things you can do for them. So send them outside or better yet join them and enjoy a little fresh air!
